Teacher of the Year / Classified of the Year Every year San Marcos Unified School District asks each school to nominate a Classified and Certified Employee of the Year. This is quite an honor! This year, Twin Oaks staff has nominated Maria Ortiz as the Classified Employee of the Year. As the Office Manager, Mrs. Ortiz has MANY responsibilities. No matter how busy Mrs. Ortiz is, she always has a smile on her face! She is warm and friendly to parents, staff and students. There is no job too big for Mrs. Ortiz and she consistently goes the extra mile to ensure that our school is running smoothly. Dale Kisselburgh has been selected as our Teacher of the Year. Ms. Kisselburgh was nominated by her peers due to her excellent teaching skills. Her love for her students is obvious in everything she does. Her classroom is motivating and her students are always challenged to do their best. Besides her classroom duties, Ms. Kisselburgh ran our Family Math Nights this year. These were a huge success due to all her efforts. Both Mrs. Ortiz and Ms. Kisselburgh are well deserving of this award. Principal's Message Students in grades 2 through 5 will be participating in the California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program. The testing schedule is the following:
Grade 2: May 5 – 14
Grade 3: May 5 – 15
Grades 4 and 5: May 5 – 13
Students will be tested in Language Arts and Math. Our 5th graders will also be tested in Science. You will receive your child’s results over the summer. It is VERY important that your child attends school on the testing days. Although your child is responsible for taking the test, there are a few important things you can do to help:
•Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep every night.
•See that your child eats a good, healthy breakfast.
•Rest, exercise and nutrition are especially important on testing days, when stress is high.
•Emphasize to your child that they are prepared and ready.
•Encourage your child to do their best and let them know how proud you are of them and all their accomplishments.
The teachers have worked hard to prepare your child for the STAR test. We are so proud of our students and we know they are going to shine. We can also use your help during the testing days. You can help by volunteering a few hours as a testing proctor. We need many proctors during this time. If you are able to help, please call Diane Debruyn at 290-2565. We appreciate all your help. Do not hesitate to call me if you have any questions about the STAR testing. Barbara Winicki, Principal ...............................................
PTO Corner Time to clean out those closets. Spring cleaning is upon us! PTO will be sponsoring TOES 1st Annual Rummage Sale on Saturday May 17th from 7:00 – 11:00 am. You may drop off the items you no longer use or need on Saturday, May 3rd or Saturday, May 10th at our school cafeteria anytime between 8:00 – 10:00 am. All proceeds from the Rummage Sale will go towards the classrooms and supplemental school programs. The money raised will greatly help due to the recent budget cuts. The success of this fundraiser is dependent upon the donations and parent volunteers. If you have any questions, please contact Karen Gayden at (760) 798-9259.
